Q. What are the system requirements for Precision Mapping v. 3.5?

  1. Precision Mapping Streets v. 3.5 is able to run on Windows 3.1x, with a minimum of 4MB RAM or Windows 95 with a minimum of 8MB RAM. The more RAM on the computer will help provide smoother drawing of the maps and executing of the program features.

Computer System

The following is a recommendation for system classes.

386, 486, Pentium below 100Mhz - Minimum system recommendations (should function adequately)

Pentium 100Mhz or Higher - Best system recommendations.

This device is required. On newer notebooks, some type of pointing device is usually built-in.

Display

The system was designed for a 256-color environment. If possible, it is strongly recommended to set your monitor to True color and/or 800 x 600.

Q. Why does the CD-ROM case read "3.0 Special Edition," the CD-ROM disk label read "Version 3.5," and the icon located in the program files read "3.0?"

  1. The latest upgraded version of Precision Mapping Streets is contained in this Special Edition packet.  The newest version is 3.0.4. It was included in a special distribution with Undertow's newest program called Precision Mapping Traveler.  We listed this special distribution CD as a Special Edition Version 3.5 to help distinguish from earlier CD releases.

  1. Click on "File" from the program manager.
  2. Choose "Run" and type in "X:\Setup.exe" ("X" represents the CD-ROM).

Q. Is there an upgrade for Precision Mapping Streets v. 3.5?

  1. Please refer to our upgrade page.

Q. Do Precision Mapping Streets v. 3.5 and Precision Mapping Traveler v. 3.5 work in conjunction with each other?

  1. No. Precision Mapping Traveler v. 3.5 is a separate program that requires a separate installation. The map drawing technology is similar, but both programs must be installed in separate folders and accessed separately for maximum benefit of each release.

Q. When I try to install Precision Mapping Streets v. 3.5, my computer freezes.

  1. Some computers have a problem reading the install shield properly. Since this is the only 16 bit program included on this disk, we included a secondary install option with your disk.  To access this install:

          In Windows 95/98/NT

  1. Double click "My Computer"

  2. Double click "pmap35 (X:)" ("X" represents the CD-ROM).
  3. Double click the icon "Setup.exe".

           In Windows 3.1x

  1. Replace "X:\Setup.exe" ("X" represents the CD-ROM) with "Setupp.exe".
(**Note: this is the ONLY program on the Special Edition v. 3.5 CD-ROM that will run properly in a Windows 3.1x environment.

Q. Is there a manual?

  1. Most operation questions can be answered using the on-line help feature.  With the program running and the CD-ROM in the drive, select "Help" and choose the desired topic.  Printing the topic for review away from the computer may be helpful.

Q. When I zoom in, the map turns yellow, and streets do not appear.

A.

  1. Make sure the CD-ROM is in the drive and close the door.
  2. In the program, select "File" then "Configure".
  3. Select "Directories" tab.
  4. Check the drive location settings (see "proper drive settings" for more information).

      OR

  1. Click the "Zoom USA" button to view the entire continent. It is possible that the cursor has zoomed to areas not of the United States such as Canada or Mexico.
  2. Make sure the "Map" button on the toolbar has been clicked on.  For more information, see the "toolbar" section of your help files.

If, by zooming into a desired location and the specific street you are looking for does not appear, but surrounding streets do, please click here for more information.

Q. When I search for a street or city, I get the message "No matches found".

A.

  1. Make sure the CD-ROM is in the drive and close the door.
  2. Double check the spelling of the street or place.  Occasionally, unexpected spaces in words are found in the directory.  For example, when looking for "DeKalb, IL", traditionally spelled as one word, the search option will only find it if a space is added (De Kalb, IL).
  3. Attempt to simplify the search by clarifying your entries. As an example, instead of  looking for "South State Street" in Chicago, just try looking for "State" (**Note: Do not put a period after the state abbreviation.).

      OR

  1. Try to change "radius" (the searching area) to maximum (50 miles).

If roads are not appearing, refer to the question "My map turns yellow when I zoom in"

Q. Can I run the Program without a CD-ROM?

  1. Yes. See the text document instructions.

Q. What are the proper drive locations in the Customize Box?

  1. For normal operations, the tab "Directories" should be:

(**Note: this assumes the drive you installed the program on is "C:\" and "X:\" is the CD-ROM drive)

 State- X:\PMAP35\STATES
 Data 1- C:\PMAP35\DATA1
 Data 2- X:\PMAP35\DATA2
 Data 3- C:\PMAP35\DATA3
 Help- X:\PMAP35\HELP

 In "Autoload" tab:

  Library- C:\PMAP35\LIB\PMAP.LIB
  Underlay- X:\PMAP35\CONTOUR\PMAP.PCC

 Q.  I can't print with my HP printer?

  1. Hewlett Packard printers have a driver conflict in Windows 95 or 98 printing (Precision Mapping Streets v.3.5). To correct this, HP suggests the following for users of Desk Jet Printers. Neither solution will affect other programs, and are HP supported recommendations.
    1. Using the Find Files or Folders Command from the Start button, search for a file called "hpfcfg." This file will be an application (*.exe) and will have numbers after it. If there is no "hpfcfg" file, proceed to step two.

Double click the "hpfcfg**.exe" program and look for a box with Windows Printer Technology (or a reasonable facsimile thereof), and UNCHECK it.

Click Ok, and restart the computer. This will allow the printer Driver to by-pass the spool 32 command in Windows 95 or 98, and allow the print to come out as desired.

    2. If you do not have a "hpfcfg" file, you need to install the HP Desk Jet 500c Driver. It is a preloaded driver included in the Windows 95 or 98 CD-ROM, or in a pre-installed CAB file. Using the "Add Printer" wizard, located in the Printer Folder via the Control Panel, install the HP Desk Jet 500c Driver. If prompted, place the Windows 9x CD-ROM in the CD-DRIVE. Do not make this driver the default printer, and run driver through the same parallel port (usually LPT 1). When printing in (Precision Mapping Streets v.3.5), make sure to choose this driver through the Setup command.

 Q. Can I use my old overlays from Precision Mapping Streets v. 2.0 with Precision Mapping Streets v. 3.5?

A. Yes.   Download and use the .exe file "pm2conv" from following link, and filter your saved
Precision Mapping Streets v. 2.0 overlays through out the converter.  After this process, your saved overlays will be compatible with all of the Precision Mapping Streets upgrades.

Download: Precision Mapping v. 2.0 Overlay Converter.

Q. When I close the program, I get this error: "Operation not supported in selected  printer".

A.     Precision Mapping Streets v. 3.5 requires that a printer is installed on the operating computer.  Install a local printer or a default printer driver.

Q. I think I have found a database error.   What should I do?

A.   At Undertow Software, we strive to bring you the highest quality, most up to date database available.  Occasionally, there will be errors in the database we use.  In this case, make a copy of the area on the map that is incorrect (see your help topic file for exporting a map in "File Commands") and email it to our technical support staff or fax it to (815) 886-9829.  We will do our best to correct these errors in future versions.
