Q. Can I run Precision Mapping Traveler v. 4.0 on a computer using Windows 3.1x?

A.  No. Precision Mapping Traveler v. 4.0 is a 32-bit program that requires a 32-bit Operating System (OS) (i.e. Windows 95 or later). Windows 3.1x is a 16-bit OS.

Q. How do I get the program toolbars to display on my screen?

A. With the program running, select "Options", then "Display". Make sure both "Toolbars" and "Status Bar" are selected.

Q. When I zoom in, the map turns yellow, and streets do not appear.

OR

  1. Click the "Zoom USA" button to view the entire continent. It is possible that the cursor has zoomed to areas not of the United States such as Canada or Mexico or out over an ocean.

Q. When I search for a street or city, I get the message "No matches found".

A.

  1. Make sure the CD-ROM disk is in the drive.
  2. Double check the spelling of the street or place. Occasionally, unexpected spaces in words are found in the directory. For example, when looking for "DeKalb, IL", traditionally spelled as one word, the search option will only find it if a space is added (De Kalb, IL).
  3. Simplify the search by shortening your entries. As an example, instead of looking for "South State Street" in Chicago, try looking for just "State".

If, by zooming into a desired location and the specific street you are looking for does not appear, but surrounding streets do, please click here for more information.

Q. How do I locate my address?

A.  Aside from manually zooming in to the area until you locate the address, you can use the ‘Search’ and ‘Address’ menu command to quickly locate your address. Type in your address in the format ‘street’, ‘city’, ‘state’, ’zip’ making sure to place a comma between the fields, and click on ‘Find’. If a listing of address matches appears, highlight the address that is the closest match and click on OK.

Q. Why can’t I search for my street address when I put in the whole address?

A.  Make sure that you typed the address in the correct format. For example, 231 Sutton St, N Andover, MA, 01845. Don’t include periods "." after St or the state abbreviations.

If the format is correct and you still can’t find the address, make sure that you have the CD-ROM disc inside of the drive. Also, select ‘File’, ‘Configure’, and make sure that the data directories all point to your CD-ROM drive.

If you are still unable to find your address, zoom into the city (‘Search’, ‘City’), and try to search for the street only – don’t include the city, state, or zip code information. If you cannot see your street, then it is not in the database. See the question on I think I have found a database error.

If you can see your street, but are still unable to perform a successful Street Search, see the question on I think I have found a database error.

Q. Why can’t I upload information to my Garmin GPS unit? It worked in version 3.5

A.  Garmin GPS units transfer data at 9600 baud when in the GRMN/GRMN mode, while 4800 baud is used when in Trip mode.  Ver. 3.5 automatically changed to 9600 baud when the data transfer mode was selected, while the early 4.0 version remained at 4800 baud.  If you experience problems with data transfer, and you have a version of Traveler that is earlier than 4.0.103, select File, Configurations, GPS and make sure the baud rate is set at 9600.  When you are through with data transfer, or wish to go to Trip Mode, you must set the baud rate back to 4800 and enable NMEA output.

You can also download and install the latest version of Traveler 4.0 from the updates page our web site.  This will change baud rates automatically when going between trip mode and data transfer mode.

Q. How do I use the Trip Mode?

A.  First, verify that the baud rate and COM port on the GPS settings match those of the program settings. To view the program setting click "File", "Configure", then the "GPS" tab.  Make sure that the settings are properly set up. Now, make sure NMEA mode on your GPS unit is on, and press "F11" in the program.  Press F11 to get out of Trip Mode.

It may be necessary to check your settings via the hyper terminal. Contact your GPS manufacturer for further information and assistance.

Q. Can I use a GPS unit other than a Magellan, Eagle/Lowrance, and Garmin?

A.  If the GPS unit can provide NMEA-0183 output, and you can connect the unit to the computer through a properly setup serial port, the unit should work in the Trip Mode. However, you will not be able to use the Data Transfer Mode unless you have one of the supported GPS units.

Q. How do I clear a route created by a point-to-point calculation?

A.  Clearing a track/route created by a point-to-point calculation is a two-step process. First, choose ‘Point-to-Point’, then ‘Clear Point-to-Point Track’. This will clear the route off the screen. To clear the track, go to ‘Tracks’ and then choose ‘Clear Track’. The program will prompt you to save the track before deleting it. You can name it and save it first if you wish, or continue and the track will be deleted.

Q. When using the point-to-point calculation feature, how do I clear my start and end points?

A. The start/end point icons are used by the program in its Point-to-Point route calculations. Currently you can only clear these icons from the display by restarting the program. If you wish to specify a different start/end point for another route calculation, click on the Start/End icons in the toolbar and then click on a new position. The start/end point icons will move to the new location.

Q. I think I have found a database error. What should I do?

A.  At Undertow Software, we strive to bring you the highest quality, most up to date database available. Occasionally, there will be errors in the database we use. In this case, make a copy of the area on the map that is incorrect (see your help topic file for exporting a map in "File Commands") and email it or fax it to (815) 886-9823. We will do our best to correct these errors in future versions.

Q. I get the error message "Failure: Roadway Disconnected" when I ask the program to calculate a route. What does this mean, and how do I correct it?

A.  Occasionally, the Tiger classification road priority and the On/Off ramp orientation on limited access highways result in a break in the routing algorithm. Unfortunately, the logic in the routing software can not bypass these breaks. As these broken roadway segments are discovered, they are corrected in the file XMAP.RTE. This external file bridges the problem node points to make certain the router can get from one node to another, bypassing the problem in the data.

If you have received this error message, please contact techsupport@undertowsoftware.com, and provide them with the start/end points of the route that generates this error. Once the break has been found, an updated XMAP.RTE file will be posted on our web site for download. To download the latest XMAP.RTE file, and for installation instructions, go to the Consumer Product Update page on our web site.

Q.  Why can’t I install Precision Mapping Traveler 4.0 on my Windows 2000 system?

A.  The installation routine on the distribution CD-ROM was unable to properly detect the Windows 2000 operating system, reporting that a service pack must be installed. The installation file has been modified to correctly recognizes Windows 2000, allowing installation to proceed on systems running Win2000/Win2000 Professional, and Win2000 Server.  Click here to jump to the Consumer Product Update page on our web site to download the update.  The update file is password protected.  To obtain the password please contact our technical support department via e-mail.

Q. Can I use the Earthmate GPS receiver with Precision Mapping Traveler 4.0?

A. We do not have a driver that will allow data transfers between the Earthmate and Precision
Mapping Traveler.  The program only works with Eagle, Magellan, and Garmin.

Q.   Why can’t I do a data transfer with a Garmin GPS unit?

A. The most common problem with a data transfer between a Garmin unit and the program is that
the  user sets the baud rate to 4800, instead of 9600.  Garmin units will only connect at 9600.

Go to ‘File’, then to ‘Configurations’, and change the baud rate to 9600.

Q.   How do you get the GPS data displays visible while in Trip Mode?

A.   Right-click and go to ‘Show All Displays’.  This will show all of the GPS data displays.

Q.  Why can’t I see my bearing or speed while Trip Mode?

A.  In your GPS unit settings, change your NMEA output to NMEA 2.1GSA.  This is the correct
     protocol you want to use.

Q   What is the xmap.rte file available for download?

A.  The xmap.rte file is the file that the program uses to route our calculations.  If there is a break in a road segment, we edit the xmap.rte file and post it on the website.  This corrects potential routing errors.  Downloading this file will keep your program up to date.

Q.   Why can’t I use tracks from GPS Link 3.0 in Precision Mapping Traveler 4.0?  The
tracks  appear all over the United States.

A.  GPS Link 3.0 adds the date and time at the end of the latitude / longitude coordinates.  This
confuses the Traveler program, causing it to jumble the track on the screen.  Just remove the
date and time from each line in your track file

Q.   Why does Traveler 4.0 send data through my modem when I am connected to the
      Internet?

A.  Traveler is not connecting to the Internet, it is just sending information to the COM port, which
would normally be connected to a GPS unit.

Q.  Every time I execute Traveler 4.0, my mouse freezes and stops responding.

A.  You most likely have two mouse drivers installed.  Right-click on ‘My  Computer’, and go to
‘Properties’.  Click on the ‘Device Manager’ tab.  Click  the plus sign next to the mouse icon.

If you have two drivers listed, delete the one you are not using.  If you only have one driver, try
replacing it with the standard Microsoft driver.

Q.   Why can’t I upload a track to my Garmin GPS receiver?

A.   The software does not support track uploads to a Garmin GPS receiver.

Q.   When I calculate a route, Traveler chooses a route that I do not want.  It ignores certain highways, streets, etc.  How can I change this?

A.  If the program is ignoring highways or streets, then you should set the priorities for those road
types under the Options button in the Calculate window.  Just set the priorities, the higher the
number, the higher priority.  If you have done all of this and the program is still routing a road
you do not want, there is nothing you can do about it.  The program does not have the

option for the user to define the route before hand.

Q.   Why does Precision Mapping Traveler crash when I exit the program?

A.   Some users may experience a crash on exit with the Traveler program. We have a new updated OCX file that may resolve your problem with Precision Mapping Traveler v.4.0.  If you would like to  install the new update file, and click to download the Special Update for  Precision Mapping Traveler 4.0.  This file is password protected.  To obtain the password please  contact our technical support department via e-mail.

Q.   How do I delete a street I have created?

A.   To delete a street that you have made, go to ‘New Streets’, then to ‘Add/Edit Street Mode’.  Now, hold down the SHIFT key and click on the street you made.  Now click ‘Delete.  This will delete the street segment.
