TLDCN-2010 Rest Areas

Postby imwasgood on Tue May 04, 2010 11:15 pm

Is there any way to locate Interstate Rest Areas by Searching for them or must I zoom into a 500' Scale and then just move along an Interstate until I come across one? It seems these should be identified as a POI or locatable through some Search method. I inquired with Undertow Software technical support via E-mail but have not received an answer.

I don't know if the rest areas should be searchable (I mean, how would you search for them, it's not like each one of them has a unique name), but I am surprised undertow didn't get back to you. They have been pretty responsive each time I emailed them a question.

Actually, Undertow did get back to me after I had posted my original comments. Their reply stated: "Based on Trailer Life’s response (they manage and provide the POI database that is plugged into the program), a lot of those locations (truck stops, etc.) are in the program’s POI data, not necessarily identified by red text. Some others are public rest stops that did not have geocoded information. They will be adding more of these, latter locations, in the next version of the program."

The 2010 Exit Now Interstate Exit Directory identifies Rest Areas with an Exit number that is in sequence with all other Exit numbers, only they are shown in parenthesis and in Red text. I would think Undertow could come up with some type of unique identifier for each Rest Area, incorporating the Interstate and Exit number in it. It would just be nice to have some type of tool to see how far the next Rest Area is from your present position in the Campground Navigator.

Wayne, I agree. It would be nice if undertow had all the rest areas identified on the map and allowed you to search for them. It would make planning a trip much easier.

I can't even find the POIs in good sized places, like Lynchburg, VA. I think I must be doing something wrong, or may be I got a bad disk.

I am learning it depends on what scale you are viewing things before landmarks or other POIs show up.

It would be nice have a feature to find landmarks or POIs within a short distance along a route, like rest stops, truck stops, Walmarts, or other common places for travelers to stop. Otherwise one must zoom in and go mile to mile to mark them along a route manually.

This sounds like it's a candidate for a wishlist for the software.

I think a lot of those points are already in TLC2010. I agree, though, they need to add more.

I asked Undertow software tech support about this feature and they confirmed I need to upgrade to 2010 TLDCN because this feature is in that version. It's included via some software called "Exit Now" which is allegedly part of it.

I was finally able to find it available but not from Trailer Life because they are out of copies and if I want to get it from them, I'll have to wait for 2011 TLDCN or hunt for some other vendor. But why run out and buy 2010 if 2011 is just around the corner. I can wait until then for the feature.

They already run our of product? Very poor planning, if you ask me :-( Either that, or the software became much more popular they had hoped for. How soon is the next version coming out?

They didn't give a specific date but if history serves me right most releases are in the Spring. Therefore, I would anticipate Spring 2011.
