Are COM Objects still viable?

Thinking out loud here. With today's development environments being so different than a few years ago and Java being the platform where most development is taking place, is there still room for COM-Object based solutions? Does anyone have any stats of what's being used for development nowadays?

Yes they are. There is a large number of high quality COM objects out there that are being used with many platforms, including Java for Win!

If you are talking about cross-platform portability, then that's a bit of a different story.
