TLCN with Ubuntu?

Postby Chris T. » Fri Sep 24, 2010 7:52 am

No, I am not using Ubuntu :-), but a friend asked me last night if he could use TLCN 2010 on his netbook computer which is running Ubuntu and I didn't know. All I know is that it's a Linux type system, but I don't know if there are program that let you run windows programs on it, like some Mac users do.

Does anyone know?

When I first got my dell netbook (with ubuntu) I probably spent two weeks trying to set it up to run all sorts of Windows programs, including TLD-2009 at the time. I'm talking over 50 hrs of frustration with nothing to show at the end of the process. So, instead of spending any more time, I returned it and got a system with Windows XP. All my Windows programs are running fine and I am happy :-)

Why would someone want to use ubuntu and then jump through hoops to make it possibly run some of their programs?

First, sorry for miss-typing the program name it should be "wine" not "vine".

Second, I wasn't advocating anyone goes out and buys a system with Ububtu :-) The OP asked if he could do something and I suggested a possible solution. I have no shares in the company that produces Ubuntu :-)

Having said that, just because you couldn't set it up, it doesn't mean nobody esle shoudl use it. I use Windows and Ubuntu all the time. Ubuntu is fast, thin, and a lot of fun. And, although I have found some incompatibilities when running some "specialized" windows apps, using vine with it allows me to run most of my windows applications, yes, including Trailer Life. It may run a bit slower, because my ubuntu system is light on resources, but I can use the mapping, routing, etc. without any problems.

I don't know why you wasted 50 hours. It took me about 5 minutes to install and set up wine, and then about 10 min to install and setup thr TL program. It was all straight forward.

I was also able to "kind-a" make it work, with an earlier version of Ubuntu and wine, but the fonts used for the street names were almost unreadable. The places looked O.K., but not the streets. Since I couldn't tell what street was what, I gave up.

Did you use any special settings in ubuntu or wine? How did you make yours to work well?

I don't know, it looks fine on my set-up. What versions of ubuntu and wine are you using? It could be an older video driver, or something like that. I am using the latest release of ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) and wine 1.1.42

No special settings that I know of. I just used all the default settings when installing ubuntu, wine and Trailer Life.

Well, guess what. I updated to the latest release of ubuntu, and wine and the street names look much better.

Thanks MichaelG

LOL, Michael, you did it AGAIN!!!

Note in fourth sentence you typed "vine" once again, but we're smarter now because of your correction in preceding and subsequent parapraphs. Those typo habits can sure be a pain in the rump.
